Jim's French Onion Dip - Old Dutch / Lays (Copycat)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or you may substitute the same amount of canola oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, etc.)
- 1 large yellow onion, chopped (select ones weighing approx. 12oz. or 340g)
- 14 teaspoon kosher salt (for onion mixture)
- 2 cups sour cream
- 12 cup mayonnaise
- 12 cup shredded romano cheese
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 12 teaspoon kosher salt (for dip mixture)
- 12 teaspoon garlic powder
- 14 teaspoon white pepper
- chives (finely chopped over top for garnish) (optional)
- Heat Butter (or oil) in Large Skillet on Med-High Heat.
- Add onions and 1/4 teaspoon Kosher Salt, stir occasionally to caramelize for approximately 20 min until onions are golden brown.
- Scrape all contents of pan into a bowl and let cool to room temperature before proceeding to the next step.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the remaining ingredients for the dip mixture.
- Once well blended, fold in all the contents of the onion mixture.
- Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.
- You may garnish with finely chopped chives over top if you desire.
