Apple Puff Bake
- 12 cup sugar, plus
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 12 cup water
- 2 baking apples (Golden Delicious or Jonagold are good)
- 34 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 12 teaspoon salt
- 14 cup shortening (Crisco is good)
- 6 tablespoons milk or 6 tablespoons half-and-half cream
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 14-12 teaspoon cinnamon
- Set oven to 450 degrees.
- In a small saucepan, heat water & 1/2 cup sugar to boiling; reduce the heat, simmer for 5 minutes.
- Peel and core, and cut the apples in half; place in a shallow greased baking dish; pour the sugar mixture over the apples.
- In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt; cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until crumbly.
- Stir in the milk to make dough.
- Top each apple half with a mound of dough (cover the apple well with the mound of dough).
- Make a hollow in the center of each mound of dough.
- Mix together the butter, remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar, and the cinnamon; spoon in hollows of dough.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until apples are tender.
