Grandma Kelley's Doughnuts
- 2 12 cups sugar
- 9 tablespoons melted lard (I know, I know)
- 3 eggs
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 4 cups sour milk (4 tsp vinegar to 4 cups milk)
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 tablespoons baking powder
- 18 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 7 -8 cups flour
- Add baking soda to the sour milk.
- Mix sugar, shortening, eggs, and salt in a large bowl.
- Add sour milk and soda mixture.
- Sift flour, baking powder, and nutmeg into the previous ingredients.
- Mix until easy to handle.
- Roll to about a 1/2 inch thickness (as if for biscuits) then cut with a doughnut cutter.
- Add flour as necessary to prevent excessive stickiness.
- Fry in deep fat at 350F until brown on one side.
- Turn and brown the other side.
- These are good plain, but can be coated with powdered sugar while warm.
