Double chocolate bear paw sugar cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Line 2 cookie sheets with foil or parchment paper.
  3. In a large bowl, melt 10 tbsp of butter in the microwave.
  4. Cut the remaining 4 tbsp into 6-8 pieces and stir into the melted butter.
  5. Allow the butter to cool until it is only warm, not hot.
  6. While waiting on the butter to cool, in a medium bowl, stir together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and baking powder.
  7. Set aside.
  8. Combine the butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt.
  9. Mix for 1 minute on medium speed or until smooth.
  10. Add the egg and mix another 30 seconds.
  11. (I do not condone letting your 4 year old use an electric mixer but little arms may get tired of hand mixing fast!)
  12. With mixer on slow, add flour and mix.
  13. Add chocolate chips.
  14. Roll the dough into balls using about 2-3 tbsp for each one.
  15. Place on cookie sheet and flatten with the bottom of a glass.
  16. They do not expand much, but leave an inch or so between cookies go be safe.
  17. Add 4 almond slivers to each cookie for the 'claws'.
  18. The kids love this part.
  19. Bake on middle shelf until the cookies are puffy and starting to crack.
  20. About 12-14 minutes.
  21. Do not overcook or your cookies will be dry!
