Good And Easy Sauerbraten Recipe

  1. Season the roast with pepper.
  2. Place in a Dutch oven to roast, uncovered, in a 475 degree oven till both sides are browned, turning once, about 4 or possibly 5 min on each side.
  3. Remove from oven.
  4. Pour vinegar and water over the roast.
  5. Arrange onion slices on top, add in bay leaves to the pot liquid.
  6. Cover and return to oven.
  7. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and cook 1 1/2 hrs or possibly till tender.
  8. Add in ginger snaps, replace cover and cook 1/2 hour longer.
  9. (Additional water may be added to thin the gravy.)
  10. Remove meat from gravy and slice as thin as possible.
  11. Serve with red cabbage and applesauce.
