Muzzi in Caruzzi (Mozzarella en Carozza)
- 1 whole Egg
- 2 Tablespoons Butter
- 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
- 4 slices Good Quality Crusty Bread, Sliced Thin
- 2 slices Fresh Mozzarella Cheese, 14-inch Thick
- Salt And Pepper, to taste
- Optional Garnish: Basil, Tomatoes, Pesto, Etc
- The below directions are for making one sandwich at a time.
- Above ingredients are for 2 sandwiches.
- Beat the egg in a shallow bowl.
- Set it aside.
- Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
- Melt 1/2 tablespoon each of butter and oil in the skillet.
- Quickly coat both sides of two slices of bread in beaten egg and place them in the hot skillet facing each other as if they were an open book.
- This will ensure the finished sandwich will have both slices of bread facing the same direction (click on the link to my blog to see step-by-step photos).
- When the 2 slices of bread are golden brown on the bottom, flip only one slice and quickly top it with one slice of fresh mozzarella cheese.
- Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper and top the cheese with the other slice of bread, toasted side against the cheese (you should have a slice of yummy mozzarella cheese sandwiched between two sides of toasted bread).
- Melt another 1/2 tablespoon each of butter and oil in the skillet and fry both the top and bottom sides of the sandwich until golden on both sides.
- Remove sandwich from pan, sprinkle with salt, and serve topped with fresh basil leaves, sliced tomatoes, or pesto.
- Repeat for the other sandwich.
