New Zealand Squares
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 14 cups flaked coconut, divided
- 1 cup dates, chopped
- 12 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 14 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon golden syrup
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F, then grease & flour a 9-inch square baking dish.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, 1 cup of coconut, dates, sugar & baking powder.
- In a saucepan melt butter, then stir in the golden syrup & vanilla.
- Pour over the mixture in the large bowl, mixing until crumbly, then press into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake 20-30 minutes, then sprinkle the top with the remaining 1/4 cup of coconut.
- When cool, cut into 9 squares & enjoy!
