Split Pea Soup

  1. Melt butter in 4-quart saucepan over medium-high heat until sizzling.
  2. Add celery and onion; cook 3-5 minutes or until vegetables are softened.
  3. Add all ingredients except salt and pepper.
  4. Cook over medium heat 12-14 minutes or until mixture comes to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat to low.
  6. Cover; cook, stirring occasionally, 1 hour or until soup begins to thicken.
  7. Remove ham shanks.
  8. Continue cooking 30 minutes.
