Sweet Wine Fritters

  1. Mix first 6 ingredients in large bowl until dough forms.
  2. Knead dough in bowl until smooth, about 5 minutes.
  3. Shape dough into ball; flatten into disk.
  4. Wrap in plastic; set aside 10 minutes.
  5. Divide dough in half.
  6. Roll out 1 disk on lightly floured surface to scant 1/8-inch thickness.
  7. Cut dough into 1/2x6-inch strips.
  8. Repeat rolling and cutting with remaining dough.
  9. Pour oil into medium saucepan to depth of 1 1/2 inches.
  10. Heat oil to 350F.
  11. Working in batches of 4 cookies, fry until golden.
  12. Using slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels; drain.
  13. Sift sugar over.
  14. (Can be made 2 days ahead.
  15. Store in airtight container at room temperature.)
