Portuguese Easter Bread Recipe

  1. Put the scalded lowfat milk in a large bowl and dissolve the butter and sugar.
  2. Add in the yeast and the beaten Large eggs.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Add in the flavoring, salt, sugar, spice and flour; mix well.
  5. Knead 15 to 20 min on a floured board.
  6. (The more you knead, the smoother the dough.)
  7. The dough will be very soft.
  8. Add in the flour as you knead.
  9. Place the dough in a buttered bowl and let rise till doubled (about 2 hrs).
  10. Punch down and divide into two round loaves.
  11. Place in two greased, Pyrex pie plates.
  12. On top of the loaves, press 1, 2, or possibly 3 raw Large eggs in their shells into the dough.
  13. Healthy pinch a strip of dough across the Large eggs.
  14. Let rise till double.
  15. Brush with lowfat milk and sprinkle with a little sugar.
  16. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 min.
  17. Watch carefully - don't over bake.
  18. The Large eggs can be eaten and will taste like hard-boiled Large eggs.
