Broiled Black Pepper Tofu

  1. Cut the tofu crosswise into 6 slices (about 3/4 inch thick each).
  2. Cut each slice diagonally into 2 triangles.
  3. Line a rimmed baking sheet with a double layer of paper towels.
  4. Place the tofu on top, and cover with another double layer of paper towels.
  5. Place another baking sheet or a large plate on top.
  6. Weight with heavy objects (such as large cans of food); let stand 20 minutes.
  7. Preheat the broiler, with a rack 6 inches from the heat.
  8. Stir together the tamari soy sauce, oil, and pepper in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
  9. Pat the tofu dry with paper towels; transfer to the baking dish.
  10. Turn to coat both sides with the marinade.
  11. Broil, flipping once, until golden brown, about 4 minutes per side.
  12. Serve with dipping sauce.
  13. Whisk together ginger, tamari soy sauce, lemon zest, lemon juice, and sesame oil in a small bowl.
  14. Set aside at room temperature until ready to serve.
  15. Just before serving, stir well.
