Basic Tomato SauceA Good Sauce for Many Different Pastas.

  1. Combine the oil, onion, and garlic in a medium skillet over medium heat.
  2. Stirring constantly, cook until the onion turns translucent, 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Stir in the tomatoes and tomato sauce, then the basil and baking soda.
  4. When the sauce begins to bubble gently, reduce the heat to medium-low.
  5. Stirring frequently, simmer until thickened, about 15 minutes.
  6. Season with salt and pepper.
