Jamaican Beef Patties

  1. Heat oil in large heavy pan.
  2. Add onions and garlic.
  3. Cook, stirring till onion wilts.
  4. Add ground meat.
  5. Cook, stirring until meat is browned.
  6. Sprinkle with curry powder, salt and pepper.
  7. Cook about 5 minutes.
  8. Stir in breadcrumbs and stock or water.
  9. Cook, stirring often, about 20 minutes.
  10. Mixture should be thick but not dry.
  11. Stir in green onions.
  12. Remove from heat and leave to cool.
  13. Make pastry by combining flour with turmeric and salt.
  14. Rub in butter or shortening until crumbly.
  15. Add water and gather into a ball.
  16. Roll out to about 1/4" thickness and cut into 4" diameter circles.
  17. Gather remaining dough together and lightly cut out again.
  18. Place about 1 Tbsp filling on each circle.
  19. Brush edges with lightly beaten egg, fold over and seal.
  20. Preheat oven to 400F
  21. Place patties on baking trays lined with aluminum foil.
  22. Brush lightly with remaining lightly beaten egg.
  23. Bake 25 to 30 till golden brown.
