German Anise Christmas Cookies

  1. In large bowl, cream butter and sugar.
  2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Beat in flavorings.
  4. Combine flour, baking powder and salt and mix well, then add to creamed mixture.
  5. Cover dough and refrigerate at least 1 hour, or until easy to handle.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 375F (190C).
  7. On lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
  8. Cut with medium-size cutters and place on parchment-lined cookie sheet.
  9. Bake in preheated oven 8 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
  10. Remove and cool on wire rack.
  11. Decorate cookies with icing and crystal sugar if desired.
