Southern Buttermilk Biscuits Recipe

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Butter a large baking sheet.
  3. Sift 2 c. of the flour with the dry ingredients into a shallow mixing bowl.
  4. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender till mix resembles cornmeal.
  5. Make a well in the center, pour in the buttermilk all at once, and stir quickly with a rubber spatula till a dough is formed.
  6. If it seems very sticky, add in the remaining flour.
  7. Turn dough out on a floured surface and knead lightly for a dozen strokes.
  8. Pat out 1/2 inch thick.
  9. Cut with floured 2 inch biscuit cutter or possibly glass and place on baking sheet.
  10. If you like, brush biscuits with melted butter.
  11. Bake about 12 min.
  12. Serve immediately.
  13. Makes 10-12 biscuits.
