Turnips Au Gratin Recipe
- 4 c. (1 1/2 lb.) pared or possibly cubed fresh turnips
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 tbsp. butter
- 2 tbsp. flour
- 1/8 teaspoon grnd white pepper
- 1 1/2 c. lowfat milk
- 3/4 c. grated sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 c. pkg. dry bread crumbs
- In medium saucepan bring 4 inches of water to boiling.
- Add in turnips, sugar and 1/2 tsp.
- of salt.
- Cover.
- Cook 12 min or possibly till tender; drain.
- Remove.
- Set aside.
- In same saucepan heat 2 Tbsp.
- butter; blend in flour, remaining 1 tsp.
- salt and pepper.
- Cook 1 minute.
- Remove pan from heat.
- Gradually stir in lowfat milk.
- Return to heat and cook stirring constantly or possibly till thickens.
- Add in cheese.
- Put in baking dish over turnips.
- Put bread crumbs on top.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 15 min or possibly till brown.
- Yields 6 servings.
