Homemade Hush Puppies
- 1 bowl (for batter)
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup Yellow corn meal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 milk
- 4 tsp granulated sugar
- 1 pinch ground black pepper
- 1 tsp Old bay seasoning
- 1 tsp butter
- 1 egg
- 1/2 onion, minced
- 2 cup vegetable oil
- Mix all dry ingredients together (baking soda, flour, corn meal, sugar, salt, old bay seasoning, black pepper) in a bowl.
- Make sure the mixture is free of lumps.
- Melt the butter.
- Combine the dry mixture with the egg, milk, and butter in the bowl.
- (The batter must have a thick consistency; if it is milky add more flour)
- Mince the onion and add to the batter.
- Pour 2 cups of vegetable oil in a saucepan and heat.
- (TEST: if oil is hot, sprinkle with a pinch of flour.
- It must sizzle)
- Add a tablespoon of batter to the hot oil.
- (about four to six will fit)
- Let them cook for about five to eight minutes.
- Take them out and place on a paper towel or cookie rack to cool for about two minutes.
- Serve and enjoy!
