Basic French Bread Dough Recipe

  1. To make whole wheat, substitute 1 1/2 c. whole flour for 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour.
  2. Set aside 1 c. flour.
  3. Mix flour, salt, sugar and yeast.
  4. Stir in warm water and oil.
  5. Fold in reserved flour to make soft dough.
  6. Knead 4 min.
  7. Roll into 12x12 inch square.
  8. Spread with butter, garlic and cheese.
  9. Roll up jelly roll fashion.
  10. Place in baking sheet which has been sprayed with cooking spray.
  11. Cover with a cloth.
  12. Place over boiling water in a large shallow pan.
  13. Allow to rise 20-30 min.
  14. Make slashes in the top of loaf.
  15. Brush with beaten egg white.
  16. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 min.
