Simple Onion Dal

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, heat the oil.
  2. Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
  3. Add the spices and cook for 1 minute further, stirring constantly.
  4. Add the lentils, and add enough boiling water to easily cover them.
  5. Sprinkle the stock cube over the top.
  6. Simmer for 25 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until the lentils are soft and have cooked down to a thick paste.
  7. You may need to add more water if your dal begins to dry up.
  8. I prefer my dal to be fairly thick, but you might prefer a runnier mixture.
