Moms Top Secret Patty Melts

  1. For the sauteed onions, slice onion and saute in a saucepan on medium heat.
  2. Add olive oil and cook for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add salt, pepper and Worcestershire towards the end of cooking.
  4. Set aside.
  5. While onions cook, prepare the patties.
  6. Mix beef and seasonings, forming into an oval shape about the sized of the sourdough bread.
  7. (My patties were about 1/3 pound each.)
  8. Heat olive oil in electric skillet and prepare to fry each patty until nicely browned, and cooked through.
  9. Remove from pan, and drain on paper towels, keeping warm until ready to assemble the sandwiches.
  10. To assemble, wipe out skillet with more paper towels, but leave some of the oil and bits of meat behind.
  11. Spread butter on each slice of bread as needed, and place buttered-side down in the skillet.
  12. On one side of the bread, place a slice of Swiss cheese.
  13. On the other side, spread a generous helping of dressing.
  14. Place a beef patty and onions on top of the dressing.
  15. Wait for bread to be warmed and toasted before assembling the sandwiches and removing from skillet.
  16. Cut and serve immediately.
