Easy Cheese Fondue
- 1 lb. Cheddar, Swiss or Jarlsberg cheese (or a combination), shredded (4 c.)
- 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
- 1 c. dry white wine or apple juice
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/8 tsp. pepper
- dash of nutmeg
- 1 (16 oz.) loaf French or Italian bread, cut in cubes (each with at least one side of crust)
- 2 medium apples, cored and cut in wedges
- 1/2 lb. grapes (seedless)
- Toss cheese with cornstarch to coat.
- Place in heavy saucepan over low heat.
- Stir from bottom as cheese begins to melt.
- When softened and smooth, gradually add wine, stirring vigorously after each addition, until wine is absorbed.
- After all wine is added and fondue is creamy, stir in salt, pepper and nutmeg.
- Pour into chafing dish, fondue pot or other flameproof serving container.
