Morning Call Doughnuts

  1. Mix milk, 1/2 cup sugar, butter and salt in pan.
  2. Heat until shortening is melted.
  3. Cool until lukewarm.
  4. Put warm water into large bowl.
  5. Add yeast.
  6. Add lukewarm milk and egg.
  7. Beat in 2 cups flour and nutmeg.
  8. Add enough flour to make soft dough.
  9. Turn on floured board.
  10. Knead 5 minutes.
  11. Put dough in greased bowl.
  12. Turn dough over to bring greased side up.
  13. Cover with damp towel.
  14. Let rise in warm place, 85u0b0 free from draft, about 1 or 1 1/2 hours or until double in bulk.
  15. Punch down.
  16. Knead.
  17. Let rest a minute to make rolling easier.
  18. Roll 1/4-inch thick into rectangle.
  19. Cut into 2 1/2-inch squares.
  20. Cover with towel.
  21. Let rise 30 minutes or until almost double.
