Date Pinwheels

  1. Cook dates, water, and sugar over low heat, stirring constantly until thick.
  2. Add butter and lemon juice.
  3. Cool.
  4. Cream sugars, shortening, egg, and vanilla.
  5. Add sifted dry ingredients gradually.
  6. Chill dough several hours or overnight.
  7. Divide dough into two parts.
  8. Roll each part into a rectangle about 1/4" thick.
  9. Spread evenly with cooled filling.
  10. Form into rolls.
  11. Chill several hours.
  12. Cut into 1/4" slices.
  13. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet.
  14. Bake 350 degrees (175 C.) for 10 minutes.
