Senate Bean Soup

  1. Sort beans and wash well.
  2. Soak overnight covered with water and 1 teaspoon salt.
  3. Place beans in 4 quarts water; bring to a boil.
  4. Saute onions in butter; add to beans.
  5. Add remaining ingredients; reduce heat and simmer for about 4 hours.
