Secret Toffee
- 1/2 c. (1 stick) butter
- 2/3 c. packed brown sugar
- 24 unsalted soda crackers (more or less)
- 1 1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate morsels
- 3/4 c. finely chopped walnuts or toasted almonds
- Preheat oven to 375u0b0.
- Line the inside of a 13 x 19-inch pan with a good-sized sheet of foil, going about 1-inch up the sides. Melt the butter in a small saucepan; add the brown sugar and boil rapidly until sugar melts and becomes syrupy, about 30 seconds. Pour into the foil-lined pan.
- Tilt pan to cover the bottom evenly.
- Arrange a layer of the crackers, allowing about 1/8-inch between each.
- Bake for 10 minutes.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate morsels and nuts over top.
- Return to oven 1 minute more.
- Remove and spread chocolate evenly over sugar and crackers with spatula.
- Refrigerate for 1 hour or more, until firm.
- Lift from pan. Peel off foil and break into chunks.
- Refrigerate for storage.
- Makes 1 1/2 pounds of candy.
