Gumdrop Gems

  1. Thoroughly cream the butter, confectioners sugar and vanilla; beat in egg.
  2. Sift together flour, soda, cream of tartar and salt. Gradually stir into creamed mixture; mix well.
  3. Shape dough into rolls 2 inches in diameter and 12 inches long.
  4. Wrap in waxed paper; chill several hours or overnight.
  5. Cut 1/4-inch thick slices.
  6. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  7. Decorate tops with gumdrop slices.
  8. Bake in a moderate oven (350u0b0) for about 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
  9. Cool slightly before removing from pan.
  10. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.
  11. (Remove black candies.)
