Irish Brown Bread

  1. Combine white flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  2. Cut in butter until it is small pieces.
  3. Stir in wheat flour and rolled oats.
  4. Make a well in the center; add buttermilk and molasses.
  5. Stir until thoroughly moistened.
  6. Gather into a ball and place on a floured board.
  7. Knead 5 times and shape into ball.
  8. Pat into a circle.
  9. Using a sharp knife, make a cross on top to allow expansion.
  10. Place on slightly greased baking sheet.
  11. Bake at 375u0b0 for 40 minutes.
  12. Loaf should be brown and sound hollow.
  13. Brush bread with melted butter.
  14. Makes 1 loaf.
