Spaghetti With Sauce Italiano
- 1 lb bulk Italian sausage or 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup chopped onion (1 large)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans diced tomatoes, undrained
- 2 (4 ounce) cans mushroom stems and pieces, drained
- 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 -2 tablespoon snipped fresh oregano (or 2 t. dried Italian seasoning, crushed)
- 12 teaspoon salt (to taste)
- 14 teaspoon ground black pepper (to taste)
- 1 cup chopped green bell pepper (1 large)
- 12 -16 ounces dried spaghetti or 12 -16 ounces linguine
- parmesan cheese (shredded or grated)
- In a big skillet, cook meat, onion, and garlic over medium heat until meat is browned and onion is tender; drain off fat.
- Meanwhile, in a 4 quart slow cooker, combine tomatoes, mushrooms, tomato paste, bay leaf, oregano, salt, and pepper; stir in meat mixture.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or on HIGH for4-5 hours.
- Discard bay leaf.
- Turn off cooker; add in bell pepper; cover and let stand for 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cook pasta in boiling, lightly salted water according to package directions; ;drain.
- Taste sauce and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Spoon meat mixture over pasta; sprinkle with cheese.
