Solar Swirls

  1. Heat oven to 350F.
  2. Combine sugar, 1 cup butter and sour cream in bowl.
  3. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy.
  4. Add eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla; continue beating until well mixed.
  5. Add all remaining cookie ingredients; beat at low speed until well mixed.
  6. Shape dough into 1-inch balls.
  7. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets; flatten slightly with palm of hand.
  8. (Dough will be soft and sticky.
  9. If dough sticks to hands, lightly flour hands.)
  10. Bake 8-10 minutes or until set.
  11. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets; remove to cooling rack.
  12. Cool completely.
  13. Combine all frosting ingredients in bowl.
  14. Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy.
  15. Combine 2 cups powdered sugar and enough milk in bowl for thin glazing consistency.
  16. Divide glaze into 2 bowls; tint red and green with food color.
  17. Frost two or three cookies at a time.
  18. Apply drops of glaze using small paintbrushes; create swirled design using toothpick.
  19. Sprinkle with decorator sugars or candies, if desired.
  20. Repeat with remaining cookies.
