Massie Stack Cake
- 3/4 c. shortening
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 c. sorghum molasses
- 3 eggs
- 1 c. milk
- 4 c. flour
- 1/2 tsp. soda
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 c. evaporated applesauce or old-fashioned dried apples cooked to make a thick filling
- spices to taste (season apples)
- Mix thoroughly the flour, salt, soda and baking powder by sifting together 3 times.
- Cream shortening, then add sugar, a little at a time, blending well.
- Add sorghum and mix thoroughly. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
- To this, add flour and milk alternately and beat until smooth.
- Place mixture, 3/8-inch thick, in floured 9-inch cake pans.
- Bake at 375u0b0 for 18 minutes.
- This should make 6 layers.
- When cool, stack up layers, using applesauce generously between each layer.
