Good Brown Beef Stew

  1. Brown meat thoroughly in 1 or 2 tablespoons fat in a large, heavy kettle.
  2. Add remaining ingredients, except carrots, whole onions and potatoes; simmer 1 hour and 45 minutes, adding water, if necessary.
  3. Add carrots, onions and potatoes and cook 30 minutes until vegetables are tender.
  4. Thicken liquid.
