Melted Ham and Cheese Loaf
- 14 cup butter
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 loaf oval rye bread or 1 loaf Italian bread, unsliced
- 8 slices boiled ham (thin slices)
- 8 slices swiss cheese (thin slices)
- Melt butter is a small saucepan, and stir in garlic.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Cut bread crosswise into 8 sections (seven cuts), not quite through to bottom crust.
- With a pastry brush, spread garlic butter on both sides of bread at each cut.
- Tuck 2 slices each of ham and cheese into every other cut in bread.
- Wrap loaf in aluminum foil; bake for 40 minutes, or until heated through.
- Open foil around loaf; turn oven to broil.
- Broil loaf for 3 to 5 minutes, until cheese bubbles.
- To serve, slice through unfilled cuts (serve while warm).
