Judy's Real Deal Apple Dumplings

  1. For syrup: Mix 1 cup of the sugar, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, and 1 /4 cups water.
  2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in margarine.
  4. For pastry: Mix flour and salt.
  5. Cut in shortening.
  6. Add 6 - 8 T cold water a little at a time, tossing with a fork, until moist enough to form into a ball.
  7. Roll into an 18 x 12 inch rectangle; cut into six 6-inch squares.
  8. Peel and core apples.
  9. (Or peaches or pears.)
  10. Place 1 fruit on each pastry square.
  11. Combine 1/4 Celsius sugar, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp nutmeg.
  12. Sprinkle on fruit.
  13. Moisten edges of pastry.
  14. Fold corners to center atop fruit; pinch to seal.
  15. Place in an oblong baking pan.
  16. Pour syrup over pastries.
  17. Bake in a 375* oven about 45 minutes or until fruit is tender and pastry is brown.
  18. Serve with ice cream if desired.
