Old-Fashioned Blackberry Jam Cake

  1. Cream butter; add brown sugar gradually.
  2. Cream until light and fluffy.
  3. The hand is best for this job.
  4. Beat egg yolks and add to mixture.
  5. Sift together soda, salt, spices and flour. Combine jam and sour milk.
  6. Add sifted dry ingredients and jam mixture alternately to creamed mixture.
  7. Beat egg whites stiff and fold in.
  8. Divide batter between two 8-inch layers.
  9. Bake at 375u0b0 for about 25 minutes.
  10. Use caramel icing.
