Meringue-Topped Apples (Apfel Mit Meringue)
- 4 each apples tart cooking, pared, cut into thin slices
- 3 tablespoons margarine melted
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 cup raisins, seedless or currants
- 1 tablespoon calvados (apple brandy) or applejack
- 3 each egg whites
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- Arrange apples in greased 8x8x2-inch baking dish.
- Pour margarine over apples.
- Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons sugar, raisins and Calvados.
- Cover and cook at 350 deg.
- until apples are tender, about 30 minutes.
- Beat together egg whites and cream of tartar on medium speed until foamy.
- Beat in 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time.
- Continue beating on high speed until stiff and glossy.
- Spread over apples.
- Bake until Meringue is golden brown.
- 12 to 15 minutes.
