Apple Torte

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Place 10-inch (3 L) springform pan in centre of large piece of heavy-duty foil; press up around pan.
  3. Set aside.
  4. In bowl, whisk flour with brown sugar.
  5. Using pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter until in pea-size pieces.
  6. Press three-quarters over bottom and up side of prepared pan.
  7. Stir almonds into remaining crumb mixture; set aside.
  8. In bowl, toss apples, lemon juice and nutmeg; spread over pastry, pressing gently.
  9. Sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture.
  10. Bake in centre of 350F (180C) oven until golden and apples are tender, 1-1/2 hours.
  11. Run knife around edge; let cool in pan on rack.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar.
