Bitterballs (Bitterballen/Dutch Meatballs)
- 3 tbsp Butter
- 3 tbsp Plain Flour
- 1 cup Milk
- 1/2 cup Beef Stock
- 1 cup Minced Meat
- 1/2 cup Grated Cheddar Cheese
- 2 medium Mushrooms (Finely Chopped)
- 1/2 Onion (Finely Chopped)
- 2 Eggs
- 1 Salt and Pepper
- 2 cup Bread Crumbs
- 1 Oil (For Frying)
- Fry the onion, mushrooms and minced meat until cooked.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter and stir in flour until smooth.
- Gradually add the beef stock and then the milk until the sauce have thickened.
- Add the salt, pepper and cheese.
- Mix in the cooked onion, mushrooms and minced meat thoroughly.
- Refrigerate untill chilled.
- Place bread crumbs in a small shallow bowl and in another bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together.
- Roll the chilled thickened sauce meat mxture into balls and cover evenly in bread crumbs.
- Dip in egg mixture and coat once again in bread crumbs.
- Heat oil in a pan and fry the balls until golden brown.
- Place on paper towels to help drain the oil and serve hot.
