Grandma J's Custard Cream Frosting Recipe
- 3/4 c. lowfat milk
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 c. whipped cream
- 1 healthy pinch salt
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 pkg. unflavored gelatin
- In a saucepan combine sugar and lowfat milk and healthy pinch of salt; bring to boil and add in egg yolks.
- Cook till thick, remove from heat and set aside.
- In small bowl dissolve gelatin in 1/4 c. cool lowfat milk.
- Add in this to warm mix and stir to dissolve gelatin completely.
- Cold completely then add in whipped cream and spread on cake.
- Garnish with nuts and maraschino cherries or possibly fresh strawberries or possibly raspberries.
- This frosting is particularly good on angel food cake but also good on other cakes too.
