Chocolate Surprise French Toast Pockets

  1. Cut a pocket horizontally in each slice of bread through the top of crust.
  2. Fill each bread slice with chocolate chips.
  3. Make batter by mixing eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon,liqueur(optional) and nutmeg in a shallow dish.
  4. One at a time, carefully dip the filled bread slices into the egg mixture to coat both sides.
  5. In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter over medium heat.
  6. Cook the slices on the hot pan until golden brown on both sides, using more butter as needed.
  7. Transfer 2 slices to each plate, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup.
