Grandma Briden'S Black And White Pie

  1. Soak gelatin in cold water 5 minutes.
  2. Scald cream in a heavy saucepan.
  3. Beat egg yolks with 6 tablespoons sugar and salt. Slowly add cream, stirring constantly.
  4. Return mixture to the pan and cook over low heat about 5 minutes until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in softened gelatin.
  6. Pour into a bowl and chill until it mounds with a spoon.
  7. Beat egg whites until frothy. Add 1/4 cup sugar gradually, beating until stiff.
  8. Fold into chilled custard.
  9. Divide mixture in half.
  10. Add almond flavoring to one half; blend well and pour into pie shell.
  11. To remaining half, add melted chocolate and vanilla flavoring.
  12. Pour over first layer.
  13. Chill.
  14. Just before serving, arrange banana slices in a circle on top of the pie.
  15. Serves 6 to 8.
