Mid Western Baked Beans Recipe
- 1 pound small dry white beans
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 tbsp. horseradish
- 1/2 lbs. ham, cubed
- 1 can tomato sauce (15 ounce.)
- 1 c. catsup
- 1 tbsp. prepared mustard
- 1 tbsp. chili pwdr
- 2 tbsp. oil
- 3 med. onions
- 2 c. apples, peeled and sliced
- Soak beans overnight in water to cover.
- Drain.
- Add in 10 c. fresh water and salt.
- Bring to boil.
- Simmer till tender, about 60 min.
- Drain, reserving 2 c. liquid.
- Add in reserved liquid to beans along with all the ingredients down to the oil, onion and apples.
- Heat oil and saute/fry onions and apples till tender.
- Stir into beans.
- Pour into 3 qt baking dish or possibly bean pot.
- Bake at 325 degrees for 2 to 3 hrs.
