Houska(Bohemian Braided Bread)
- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/4 c. warm water
- 3/4 c. sugar
- 1/2 c. butter
- 1 c. milk, scalded
- 4 egg yolks
- 1/4 tsp. mace
- 1 tsp. salt
- grated rind of 1 lemon
- 4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/2 c. raisins
- 1/2 c. diced candied cherries
- 1/2 c. chopped nuts
- little sweetened milk
- 3/4 c. powdered sugar
- chopped nuts and cherries (for topping)
- Dissolve yeast in warm water.
- Let stand 5 minutes.
- Place sugar and butter in bowl of electric mixer.
- Pour in scalded milk and cool to lukewarm.
- Add egg yolks, grated lemon rind, mace, salt, yeast and half the flour.
- Beat 5 minutes.
- Stir in remaining flour, then stir in the fruit and nuts.
