Apple Stack Cake Recipe
- 1/2 c. Crisco
- 1 c. Sugar
- 1 c. Molasses
- 3 x Large eggs, beaten
- 1 1/3 c. Buttermilk
- 3 c. Self-Rising Flour
- 1 tsp Ginger
- 1 tsp Baking Soda
- 1 quart Apples
- 1 c. Sugar
- 1 tsp Apple Pie Spice
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- This recipe is my Mammaw's as described by my cousin Ethel Tackett to the Alleghany Freewill Baptist Auxiliary in Alleghany, Kentucky.
- It is a little different than I originally remembered but as I read the recipe the flavors all came back to me.
- Hope you enjoy!
- Cream together sugar, molasses and Crisco.
- Add in Large eggs and mix well.
- Add in bittermilk and mix.
- Add in soda and ginger to flour; by hand, blend flour into creamed mix.
- Pour 1/2 c. of mix into greased pans.
- Bake at 400 till till done.
- Makes 6 - 8 layers, if using 8-inch pans.
- Cook apples, sugar and spices together.
- Stack cake together using apples between each layer.
- NOTE: I remember Mammaw using dry apples rather than fresh.
- Obviously my cousin has updated this a touch.
