German Chocolate Cake(1993 Dairy Festival 1St Place)

  1. Grease and lightly flour two 8 x 1 1/2-inch round baking pans; set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, heat chocolate and water until chocolate melts; cool.
  3. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt. In a mixer bowl, beat butter or margarine on medium speed of electric mixer about 30 seconds.
  4. Add sugar and vanilla; beat until fluffy.
  5. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating on medium speed for 1 minute after each.
  6. Beat in chocolate mixture.
  7. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately to beaten mixture, beating after each addition.
  8. Fold in egg whites.
