Applesauce Doughnuts

  1. Combine and sift together the first 7 ingredients.
  2. Beat together the shortening, sugar and eggs until thick and creamy. Beat in vanilla, applesauce and buttermilk.
  3. Add flour mixture, 1 cup at a time, beating smooth after each addition.
  4. Chill batter about 1 hour.
  5. Turn out on lightly floured board and roll out 3/8-inch thick.
  6. Cut into 2 1/2-inch doughnuts (leftover biscuits may be re-rolled once and cut).
