German Chocolate Cake
- 1/4 lb. sweet cooking chocolate
- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1 c. (2 sticks) butter
- 2 c. sugar
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 c. buttermilk
- Melt chocolate in water; cool.
- Cream butter and sugar with electric mixer until lightly fluffy.
- Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Add chocolate and vanilla; mix well.
- Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk to butter mixture, beating after each addition, until batter is smooth.
- Beat egg whites until soft peaks form.
- Fold into cake batter.
- Bake in 3 waxed paper lined 9-inch pans in a 350u0b0 oven for 30 to 40 minutes.
- Cool and frost with Coconut-Pecan Frosting.
