Berlin Garlands
- 1 c. sifted confectioners sugar
- 1 c. butter
- 2 eggs, separated
- 1/2 tsp. almond extract
- 2 1/4 c. flour
- dash of salt
- green candied cherries, quartered
- red candied cherries, halved
- In a large bowl, cream butter with confectioners sugar until fluffy.
- Beat in egg yolks and almond extract.
- Stir in flour and salt until blended.
- Chill several hours or overnight until dough is firm enough to handle.
- Preheat oven to 375u0b0.
- Beat egg whites until frothy.
- Pinch off a level tablespoon of dough at a time and roll with the palm of your hands on a lightly floured pastry cloth until you have a log about 8 inches long.
- Shape into a wreath, overlapping ends.
- Place about 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets.
- Brush with beaten egg whites.
- Press green and red candied cherries onto dough to resemble holly.
- Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly golden.
- Remove from cookie sheets; cool on wire racks.
- Makes about 2 1/2 dozen.
