Homemade Strawberry Shortcake
- 4 cups strawberries
- 2 cups flour
- 14 cup shortening
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 34 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Preheat oven to 450F.
- Wash, trim, and slice strawberries.
- (I use an entire carton) Place in a medium size bowl.
- Add a 1/4 cup of sugar and mix gently, and place in the refrigerator.
- In a mixing bowl; measure flour, baking powder and salt.
- Cut in shorting until mixture looks like cornmeal.
- Stir in almost all of the milk.
- If dough is not pliable add enough milk to make soft and puffy.
- round up dough and place on a lightly floured board, kneed lightly for 20 -25 seconds.
- I use a cookie scoop to measure out biscuits instead of rolling them out.
- Place an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
- Server warm or cold.
- Top with milk or ice cream and whip cream.
