Cabbage Rolls
- 12 large cabbage leaves
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 c. rice (not instant)
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. sage
- 1/2 tsp. thyme
- 1 1/4 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- 1 small chopped onion
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 3 Tbsp. Crisco oil
- 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar
- 2 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce
- 1/4 c. water
- Cover cabbage leaves with boiling water and let stand until limp.
- Drain.
- Combine beef, salt, pepper, rice, onion, egg and seasonings.
- Place a portion of meat mixture in a cabbage leaf, roll and secure with toothpicks.
- Brown in Crisco oil.
- Combine sugar, water, lemon juice and tomato sauce; pour over rolls. Cover and simmer 1 hour.
- Baste now and then.
