Savory Beef Stew

  1. Melt shortening in a 2-quart saucepan; brown meat.
  2. Add 1/2 cup water, the bouillon cube, garlic, bay leaf, salt, allspice and lemon juice.
  3. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally.
  4. Reduce heat.
  5. Cover; simmer until meat is almost tender, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  6. Add onions, potatoes and carrots; heat to boiling.
  7. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 10 to 20 minutes.
  8. (Time varies by how firm you like your vegetables.)
  9. Add peas; cook until tender, 6 to 10 minutes.
